Indian expatriates in UAE and from other countries were worried whether they should apply for Aadhaar Card to save their accounts in India, but as per the clarification from Indian Authorities, NRI should not worry about Aadhaar Card.
When Indian Parliament announced that Aadhaar Number is mandatory to mention when filing income tax return, many NRIs filed petitions to Indian Government requesting to exempt them from this step as they don't have Aadhaar Card.
Meenakshi J. Goswami the commissioner of income tax stated that quoting Aadhaar Number is mandatory only to those who is eligible to obtain Aadhaar Number, as per the Aadhaar Act 2016 only resident Individual is entitles to obtain Aadhaar.
Resident is an individual who is residing in India for period of 182 days or more in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of application for enrollment. Accordingly, the requirement quoting Aadhaar as per Section 139AA of the Income tax Act shall not apply to an individual who is not a resident as per the Aadhaar Act 2016."
